Chickens & Friends
One of our first projects was to make a four acre fox proof enclosure for the chickens, ducks and geese. We had an ideal area of woodland with a little valley, a stream and pond, and grassland on either side.
Our first attempts at fox proofing were successfully thwarted by a badger who dug a large hole under the wire, letting a fox in and losing us twenty goslings – all our initial stock! It also exposed serious failings in a conceptual daylight henhouse we had developed (seen in the background of the picture above). We have since made alterations which have so far been successful.
We now have chickens, ducks, geese, guinea fowl and turkeys in this enclosure and additional stock in other fields. All the birds are happy living together!
We have several chickens that think they are ducks and most chickens roost in the winter trees in preference to their nice warm shed. The long term aim is to incubate our own flocks, success so far limited to one named Goliath.
